Sgt. Derek Blumbergs ’95 (Natural Resources Conservation Law Enforcement) was the Yates County Sheriff’s Department Officer of the Year for 2022. Blumbergs recently retired after a 27-year career with the sheriff’s office. He began his career in 1996 as a part-time corrections officer and also served on the sheriff’s office marine patrol. He became a road patrol deputy in 1999 and was promoted to sergeant in 2008. Sgt. Maj. Thomas Calarco ’97 (Liberal Arts and Sciences) became the command sergeant major at the Army’s Fort McCoy Garrison in Wisconsin in July. In 2011, Calarco deployed with the U.S. Army Hospital Task Force Medical KFOR to Kosovo. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), the Army Commendation Medal (four awards), the Army Achievement Medal (two awards), National Defense Service Medal (two awards), and the Kosovo Campaign Medal. the 00s Matthew Colton was appointed the new chief of police in Geneva following 15 years with the city department during which time he served as an officer, lieutenant and detective. the 10s Ryan Vogt ’13 (Computer Science and Engineering Science), a mathematician with the National Security Agency and Department of Defense, gave a talk on the Meissner effect, also known as quantum levitation, at the FLCC main campus in May. Jessica (Carder) VanDeMar ’16 (Tourism Studies) received her bachelor’s in tourism and recreation management from Niagara University and spent a few years employed at AAA. She celebrated her one-year anniversary as the partner engagement and visitor services manager at Finger Lakes Visitors Connection in Canandaigua. Samantha (Parish) Goodman ’19 (Liberal Arts/ Writing) joined the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce in July as director of communications and digital media. She has a bachelor’s degree in writing and rhetoric with a minor in sociology from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and previously worked as a reporter and content creator for Fingerlakes1.com. Rachel Montondo ’19 (Accounting) wanted to blend her passions for business and art and is now working at JoAnn Fabrics in Canandaigua. Sarah Hoffman ’19 (Culinary Arts) manages Gleaners Community Kitchen at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Canandaigua. Sarah supervises the kitchen to offer healthy meals to those in need and handles grant writing, social media updates, and other organizational duties. Kaitlin Adams ’19 (Fish and Wildlife) completed a summer internship at the Rockpile Museum in Wyoming. She plans to continue her master’s degree work at SUNY Oneonta in museum studies. the 20s Lindsey Sharp ’22 (Nursing) is working at Rochester General Hospital. Samantha Peters ’22 (Nursing) received the UR Medicine Thompson Health DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse at F.F. Thompson Hospital following a nomination by a patient who praised her caregiving. The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses.
