campus happenings Summer of exploration The College held STEAM day camps for middle school students during the summer at the campus centers in Geneva, Victor and Newark. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. The camps gave students who had spent a lot of time online during the school year an opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, get outdoors, and work in teams. Each camp had a theme. In Victor, students explored technology and the physical sciences. In Newark, students learned about the natural world. The Geneva camp focused on the scientific method. photos by jan regan the LAKER | 17 Students at the Victor camp worked together to design model cars. Students at the Newark summer camp spent time observing the flora and fauna outside the center and recording their observations, questions and thoughts like naturalists. Jack Riley, instructor of mechanical technology, gets students at the Victor camp started on a project to build a car with simple materials to determine what features would cause it to roll the farthest coming off a ramp. Students explored the land around the Newark Campus Center and learned about local wildlife, native and nonnative plants, environmental issues, sustainability and stewardship. Students at the Geneva camp work their way through a project to test where samples fall on the pH scale.
